Bedroom boogie

Norway's Casiokids make the kind of music I'd put on a mixtape for a gal that I was into. And I would secretly hope that she'd later dance around to that mixtape in her bedroom while in her underwear. My perversities are both subtle and complex.

I mean, come on. These songs make you want to shake your ass, right?

Cancer, if you must know

I prefer the actual, dance-pop original of this Wedding Present song, but I'll take an acoustic version of it, too. "What Did Your Last Servant Die Of?" has found a safe home in my DJ sets. And this band's cover of "Getting Better" is very likely to be played on my all-covers edition of the radio show this Thursday. Tune in! (And feel free to suggest any covers you like).

CFTPA RIP

Tonight's the LA date of Casiotone for the Painfully Alone's final tour. I'm gonna miss that morose little booknerd. :(

Karaoke hero

This remains, basically, the greatest song ever written. Every time I find myself at karaoke, this is the first thing I look for, and I've never found it. Someday I will. And on that day, I will become a god.

I DID get to live my dream of singing this song, however. Granted, it was only on Rock Band for XBOX. But...still. I am the king of the fuckjam.

Happy friday, my friends,

School's started at KUCI's homebase of UC Irvine. Welcome to the new freshman-type folks. Know that you'll always have a friend with KUCI. Granted, they're gonna be a socially awkward friend who will complain about mainstream radio all the time, but a friend just the same.

What I played last night:

Serial killer-related wordplay

We're still firmly ensconced in "all Brian Eno, all the time" over here at Fort Square. The guy's just...so fascinating and talented. He invented like, two or three genres of music, has worked with/produced some of the best artists in music history, and his full name is Brian Peter George St John le Baptiste de la Salle Eno. Seriously.

You may hear this song and think "That kind of reminds me of Talking Heads' Remain in Light album. Well, three years after this album (Before and After Science) was released, Eno produced Remain in Light. In fact, the title of this song, "King's Lead Hat" is an anagram of Talking Heads. /mindblow

Sometimes the band name is better than the band

Not that Trent Reznor's new band, How to Destroy Angels, isn't decent. It is. It's just not as rad as that band name. But, if you want to check it out, their debut 6-song EP can be downloaded for free (well...free if you give them your email address). Do it here.

Must...resist...ejaculation....reference

I don't know what it is about this Brian Eno song, but when it's playing, I feel intensely relaxed. I don't know if it's the fuzzy tone, or the simple riff, or what. I just get all relieved.

Maybe it's just because I like the Beulah song that ripped it off?

It's in there somewhere

You can't see a goddamned thing in this video, but coming out of the darkness is a lovely little ditty by Mr. Stephen Steinbrink/French Quarter, off of his wholly pleasant It's Not Just Kissing LP, available on Life's Blood records. Check it out, dawgz and dawgettez.

Howdy folks,

Here's a little playlist parade of what was played on TtAS last night. Read it and relive our time together as you head into the weekend. And if you're in the LA area, maybe I'll see you at Cinespia's "Night of the Living Dead" screening Saturday night? A zombie movie in a cemetery. Oh, how we tempt fate.

Man, German TV is weird as hell

This song rules my face, though. Can't decide if I like that vesion best or this one:

Either way, it's a song I'm going to play nearly every time I DJ a place, though.

Why isn't there more kraut-pop?

Stereolab takes the motorik beats of Can and Neu and combines them with VU-ish pop leanings. That's a pretty unique formula that I could stand to have a good deal more of. I mean, this radio edit version of "Jenny Ondioline" is only 4 minutes of the song's original 18. Why doesn't the world want me to be happy?

2010: Year of the Cave

Nick Cave is, hands down, my most listened-to artist this year. God damn this presses my buttons.

And I learned to play this one on the ukulele. I can't begin to explain how much that excited me.

Playlist for 9-9-10

Happy friday, hombres y hombrettes,

So, a friend of mine planned to have a pool party, and when everyone had said when they were available and the dust settled, we realized that we're having a drunken pool party on 9/11. Oh well. I'll try to be extra polite to any police and firemen that show up after we drunkenly burn things.

Current mood

WHY?!?!?!

Why is this song so ridiculously good? Story of my goddamned life.

I don't really buy digital music, and I don't really download things illegally, so I'm left with a quandary: how can I buy this song? I'm fairly certain I'm not going to want a "best of Rick Springfield" album. I've been looking and like, the only other things with that song on it are like...the second volume of the "Boogie Nights" soundtrack, a bunch of "Now That's What I Call Music"-type collections, and a 1980s retrospective Rhino Records-ish box set that you can't get for less than $80. Maybe I'll just find a way to steal it. You made me do this, world.
