All the boogies in the world

There's something about White Rainbow that puts him over all other drone-type acts in my book. If I've had a stressful day, and the muscles in my back are all knotted up, White Rainbow has remarkably restorative properties. It's like wizardry. But with guitars.

And this clip gives you some bonus booty-shakin' beats at the beginning. So there's that. :)

Mix CD: Sex Jamz

I make mix CDs for another mix-community I started, so I may as well share them here to increase content. Rejoice. Free music is at hand.

So, as I put together this mix, I realize that, apparently, my natural sex-vibe is like....chill/intimate/narcotic/whispery [unless my partner requests otherwise]. So, thanks for the journey of self-discovery, mix CD.

Download all the sweet jams here.

1. Charlotte Gainsbourg & Calexico - Just Like A Woman
Bob Dylan songs are sexy, but his voice maybe not so much. So just slap a french gal on there and don't stop 'til the panties drop. Also, this song will cheer me up if it turns out she's a tranny. Bonuspoints.
2. Nina Simone - I Want A Little Sugar In My Bowl
I know the metaphor is a little deep here, but I'm pretty sure this song is about sex.
3. Low - Venus
Gonna get it on? Better put on some music by some married Mormons.
4. The National - Slow Show
Goofy striptease ACTIVATE.
5. Broken Social Scene - I'm Still Your Fag
I like to confuse a lady while I'm in bed with her.
6. Iron & Wine - My Lady's House
Duh.
7. Smog - To Be Of Use
You know what? Me too, Mr. Callahan.
8. The Field Mice - And Before The First Kiss
I'm an immature, pop-loving romantic at heart.
9. Okkervil River - Maine Island Lovers
I just hope I'm doing well enough to distract her from the song's lyrics. Because brutally honest songs about affairs may not be her biggest turn-on.
10. White Rainbow - Guilded Golden Ladies
God. How often do I put this song on mixes?
11. Yo La Tengo - More Stars Than There Are In Heaven
One of YLT's dreamy jams. With a slow, suggestive build.
12. Múm - Green Grass Of Tunnel
Begin dreamy, female-voiced electronic block.
13. High Places - From Stardust To Sentience
Continue.
14. The XX - Night Time
Wrap it up (the block, I mean. Not like...a condom PSA).
15. Lovage - Strangers On A Train
OK. So...it starts to get a little goofy starting here. But let's be honest. This mix has probably outlived its usefulness by now.
16. Serge Gainsbourg - Melody
Two Gainsbourgs on one mix! What a country! (France, I mean).
17. Cars Can Be Blue - Dirty Song
And with that, the mood is destroyed.

Errything gon' be ALRIGHT!

So, punk music has always been slammed for being too simple/crass. But this song is literally the exact same five note riff for 6 minutes, and--based on the lyrics--may as well have been called "I do drugs and I fuck." This song is tougher than anything on Epitaph Records.

Mmmmmmm

Jawbox's "For Your Own Special Sweetheart" has been living in my stereo for about a week now. And now I'm posting a music video for you to watch. Cause and effect. That's science. "Thumbs up, science" - Carl Sagan

Playlist for 3-25-10

Hey folks,

I'm not going to lie. I played a ton of sick music last night. And because it's spring break, no one was around to hear it except a select few diehard folks. But those people received a direct laser beam of intense rocking right to their faces, and their faces melted off while they were screaming "AAWWWEEEESOOOOMMMEEEE!!!"

You should really try to tune in next week.

Information and Entertainment

This album came out a decade ago, and is a) pretty much better than any hiphop album released since then, and b) totally fresh and doesn't feel dated in any way. I guess setting an album 1000 years in the future has that effect. If I had to give up all but a few hiphop CDs, this one would definitely would make it into the "save" pile (as would Aesop Rock's "Labor Days" and Wu-Tang's "Enter the Wu-Tang").

Letter or lament

Xiu Xiu - Dear God, I Hate Myself from Kill Rock Stars on Vimeo.

Who else is going to the Xiu Xiu show tonight? So many of your favorite KUCI DJs, past and present, will be there!

I'm not able. I'm just Cain.

There are days (like today, for instance), where there is no music but Tom Waits. He is all I want to listen to forever. I could do worse for eternity.

What do you say we go and get a beer?

This may be the world's most perfect indie-pop song. It's possible.

Jesus/sex/drinking

Fact: Willie Nelson is a better songwriter than most of the artists in your album library.
Fact: Phosphorescent's album of Willie Nelson covers, "To Willie," has been stuck in my CD player for a while.

For debate: Willie Nelson: Country Music:: Spiritualized: Rock Music

Discuss.

I'm a Lebowski, you're a Lebowski

I've been listening to a ton of David Bazan, spent the last week near Greenwich Village, and watched The Dude win an Oscar last night. This song is a great culmination of the last week.
